The Spectral Momentum Density of Aluminium, Copper and Gold Measured by Electron Momentum Spectroscopy
نویسندگان
چکیده
Electron momentum spectroscopy (EMS) gives direct information of the full energyresolved electron momentum densities of occupied states (bands) in solids – single crystal, polycrystalline or amorphous. Here we present data from a new high energy EMS spectrometer using 50 keV incident and 25 keV outgoing electrons, on polycrystalline specimens of aluminium, copper and gold. The spectral momentum densities show very significant electron-electron correlation effects which are in good agreement with many-body Green’s function calculations.

Spectral momentum densities in matter determined by electron scattering.
In electron momentum spectroscopy (EMS), an incoming energetic electron (50 keV in this work) ionizes the target and the scattered and ejected electrons are detected in coincidence (at energies near 25 keV). From the energy and momentum of the detected particles, the energy omega and momentum q transferred to the target can be inferred. The observed intensity distribution I(omega, q) is proport...
متن کاملProbing the spectral densities over the full three-dimensional momentum space
Electron momentum spectroscopy is often used to determine the spectral function of materials. It relies on the determination of the scattering angle of electrons with extremely high precision. In practice, it is important to calibrate these angles, and hence the momentum scales. Here we describe a method to do so and show how minor misalignments affect the measured momentum densities of Li2O. U...
متن کاملBand structure of silicon as measured in extended momentum space
Direct measurement of the wave function or at least the modulus squared of the wave function, the spectral function is an important goal in electron spectroscopy. This requires a state-selective i.e., energy resolved measurement of the momentum density in all of momentum space, not just the reduced Brillouin zone. Photoemission has been used very successfully to measure dispersion, mainly in th...
متن کاملQuantitative measurement of the spectral function of aluminum and lithium by electron momentum spectroscopy
We present measurements of the spectral function of aluminum and lithium using high-energy electron momentum spectroscopy. For aluminum the quasiparticle peaks show clear asymmetries and significant satellite intensity that extends over a wide region to larger binding energies. The intensity distribution is not well described by band structure calculations. These data are described only by calc...
متن کاملInfluence of electron diffraction on measured energy-resolved momentum densities in single-crystalline silicon
Electron momentum spectroscopy is used to determine the spectral function of silicon single crystals. In these experiments 50 keV electrons impinge on a self-supporting thin silicon film and scattered and ejected electrons emerging from this sample with energies near 25 keV are detected in coincidence. Diffraction effects are present that give rise to additional structures in the measured spect...
